How to use the Salary band scenario function

Ravio’s scenarios allow you to create different iterations of your salary bands in a safe staging environment. This guide covers how to create, edit, and activate scenarios to manage your compensation strategy year-on-year.

Overview

Salary band scenarios are different versions of your compensation structures saved within the app. While only one band can be ‘active’ and visible in the main view at any time, scenarios provide a staging environment where you can make deep edits without affecting your live data immediately.

This is particularly useful for:

  1. Testing changes: Duplicating your current bands to trial new ranges or structures.

  2. Annual planning: Creating new salary bands for specific years (e.g. 2024, 2025, 2026) to reflect on historical data.

Prerequisites

  1. Permission level: Admin or People team access.

  2. Data needed: Existing salary bands or job titles assigned to your account.

Step-by-step instructions

Step 1: Navigate to scenarios

To begin, you need to access the scenario management area.
  1. Navigate to Bands > Scenarios in the left-hand sidebar.

  2.  Here you will see a list of your existing scenarios and their current status (e.g. Active, Draft, or Inactive).

Step 2: Create or duplicate a scenario

  1. You can either start from scratch or build upon what you already have.

  2. Click the Add a scenario button in the top right corner.

  3. Alternatively, select Duplicate scenario to copy your current active bands into a new staging environment.
  4. Or, select Start from active bands to create a fresh iteration for the upcoming year.

Step 3: Edit your scenario

  1. Once your scenario is created, you can make detailed adjustments.
  2. Click on the name of your draft scenario to open the View mode.

  3. Click the Scenario menu in the bottom left and select Edit.

From here, you can update several core areas:

  • Band groups: Reassign job titles or add unassigned roles.

  • Band locations: Change your geographic pay locations.

  • Band levels: Adjust the level structure you are using.

  • Band ranges: Refresh midpoints, widths, and peer groups for specific bands or locations.

Step 4: Activate your scenario

  1. When you are satisfied with the changes, you can push them live.
  2. Open the Scenario menu and select Set as ‘Active’.

  3. A confirmation box will appear. Type “ACTIVATE” into the text field.

  4. Click Set as Active. This scenario will now become your live data, and the previous active band will automatically become a draft.

Note: Use scenarios to plan for the next financial year in advance – it keeps your historical data organized and allows for easy comparisons.
